Wae Rebo – A Hidden Paradise on Earth

Wae Rebo is a traditional village in the district of Manggarai, West Flores, East Nusa Tenggara province of  Indonesia. The village has received the Top Award of Excellence from UNISCO in 2012 in Bangkok Asia Pacific Heritage awards. Since then this village has attracted many tourist from around the world. According to the history the village was found by “Empu Maro” the main ancestor over of 100 years ago. 

What is the unique things of Wae Rebo?

Wae Rebo is famous with their characteristic of unique houses of Mbaru Niang. It is high very shape, completely covered by lontar from the top of roof to the ground. Inside of the house have five level. 1. Lutur (tent), 2. Lobo (attic), 3 Lentar for harvest store. 4.Lempa Rae for reserve of food stock. 5. Hekang Kode is the most sacred where all the offerings put for their ancestors.

Wae Rebo is a very small and isolated village. The village situated in pleasant and peacefully, surrounded by rain forest mountains. It is located 1.100 m above the sea level which made the village like the hidden paradise. The village offers visitors a unique opportunity to see authentic Manggarai housing and to experience their daily life of the local community. In the village of Wae Rebo, visitors can see mbaru niang – traditional, circular cone-shaped houses with very unique architecture. Nowadays, it is still a place to hold meetings, rituals and Sunday-morning prayers together

How to get there?

It will take 4 hours by car from Labuan Bajo and 2.5 hours by motorbike. Approx. 3.5 hours trekking from Dintor village, the starting point. From Ruteng the capital city of Manggarain regency, the trip will takes about 3 – 3 1/2 hours. If you want to go back from Denge to Ruteng, you need to wake up early as the bis kayu (oto kol) departs from Denge at 5.30am. (Adrian Floresfuntrips)
